NOTE: This story was taken from the blog of Foundations Health Solutions leader Bob Speelman. Each week Bob works at one of our Foundations Health facilities in different roles such as housekeeping, or as a nursing assistant, to see firsthand how we embody the vision of our founder and nursing home developer, Brian Colleran, to be "A Culture of Care."
I spent the day at Jefferson Healthcare Center, our four-star, 99-bed facility in Jefferson, Ohio. Kelly Johnson is the administrator, and I have a huge amount of respect for her. Kelly's leadership and passion make a difference in the lives of her staff and residents.
I worked on the memory care unit with an amazing veteran team. Diane Jackson, who has been at Jefferson for 30 years, was the nurse on the unit and she was constantly in and out of resident rooms helping the staff with resident care and feeding at mealtimes.
The two STNA's on the unit that I worked with where Patricia Yunker, who has been at Jefferson for 28 years, and Tammy Davis, who has been at Jefferson for 25 years. They were so kind and loving with their residents. Whether they were playing a game, watching a show with them, doing their nails, consoling a resident, or providing care you could feel the love and compassion.
Toward the end of the day, I went to Kelly's office and was telling her about the wonderful experience I had with her team. As we talked, you could see Kelly's passion for our Culture of Care. She asked me to take a walk with her; she had something to show me. We walked down the hall and through a door that leads to the breakroom and time clock. All along the wall were handprints of her staff. She told me they did this on staff appreciation day. The message Kelly told me is, "We are a team, every employee has a HAND in our success."
As we were standing there talking an STNA walked by and noticed us looking at the wall and said, "Together we are making something beautiful here." I couldn't agree more! The Culture of Care is alive and well at Jefferson Healthcare. You can feel it in the air.
"I worry that business leaders are more interested in material gain than they are in having the patience to build up a strong organization, and a strong organization starts with caring for their people."
John Wooden
Kelly – Your patient leadership and caring for your staff is what we are all about! I couldn't be prouder of you and your team. You truly are "Making Something Beautiful!"
