January Resident Spotlight

January 26, 2023

Here at Jefferson Healthcare Center, it's important to us to turn the spotlight onto our amazing residents that we get to work with every day. Getting to know each and every one of our residents is such an honor. They always have interesting life stories to share and wisdom to pass on to us. Meet our January Resident Spotlight, Roger Hubbell!

Roger is such a pleasure to talk to and be around. He is very active within the facility and is currently serving as our Resident Council President. He will also be celebrating his 96th birthday later this month! Roger attributes his longevity to, “clean living and daily applesauce!” His life motto is, “be honest."

Get to know Roger

Roger was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Fairview High School, just south of Rocky River. At age 17, Roger joined the U.S. Army and had his basic training at Camp Blanding in Florida. At that time, the United States was engaged, along with our Allies, in battling the Axis forces in Europe and the Pacific. Roger relates that the Army was in need of radio operators, so along with Infantry Training, he trained at the Advanced Radio School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Roger was shipped overseas and landed in Le Havre, France. He was sent to southern France, traveling through the snow in an open cattle train with a straw floor.

He arrived in Southern Belgium/Northeast France, to serve during the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes Forrest. Roger gained the rank of Sergeant Major and served under General Dwight Eisenhower, being in charge of his headquarters. “I had three French Secretaries and a jeep,” says Roger.

After his discharge, Roger was in the Army Reserves until 1953. Roger went on to attend Baldwin Wallace College, where he met his future wife, Jean. “She fell off of her chair in front of me during art class,” exclaimed Roger. After college, Roger was an Office Manager, working with early computers. He went on to restore a house that had been built in the 1880s and also built a new house after that. Roger and Jean went on to have a daughter named Beth. The family lived in Lakewood, Chesterland and Chardon, where Beth graduated from high school. Moving to Rome, Ohio, the Hubbells ran a dog boarding kennel for 15 years.

What a life Roger has lived! He has been through many life experiences that people don't typically go through. First and foremost, we thank him for his bravery and service to our country. We can't begin to express our gratitude to him. Thank you for sharing your interesting life journey with us. It's a pleasure to serve you here at Jefferson Healthcare Center!
